What I Ate This Week: Tapas Nights, Carbonara Perfection & A Steakhouse Feast (Mar 2 – 8)

Some weeks feel routine. Others remind you exactly why food sits at the center of life.

This past week blended the comfort of Sunday leftovers, spontaneous tapas at Barcelona Wine Bar, a perfect Roman carbonara at Trattoria A’Vucchella, and a Saturday night steakhouse-style feast built around beautiful filets from The Darien Butcher Shop.

Winter is still hanging around in Connecticut, but the table has been warm.

And that’s really what The Amore Life is all about.

Sunday Cooking Pays Off All Week

One of the great pleasures of cooking big on Sunday is how it quietly carries you through the start of the week.

A pot of slow-simmered ragù from the weekend became the backbone of Monday and Tuesday dinners. There’s something deeply satisfying about opening the refrigerator and knowing the hard work has already been done.

Tuesday’s dinner was simple and perfect: fresh ravioli tossed in that leftover sauce, reheated slowly so the flavors woke back up. A little grated Parmigiano, a drizzle of olive oil, and suddenly a midweek dinner feels like something far more thoughtful than it really was.

That’s the secret of Italian cooking. Not complexity — continuity.

Tapas & Sangria at Barcelona Wine Bar

Wednesday night called for getting out of the house, and Barcelona Wine Bar in Fairfield is always a reliable move when you want a lively table and a parade of small plates.

We leaned into tapas the way you’re supposed to: order too much and share everything.

The table filled quickly.

Patatas bravas, crispy potatoes with spicy aioli.
Hanger steak, perfectly seared and sliced.
Spiced beef empanadas, rich and savory.
Parsnips gratin, creamy and unexpectedly addictive.
Albondigas, those classic Spanish meatballs in tomato sauce.
And of course croquettes, golden and creamy inside.

The drinks kept pace.

The Guns & Rosés sangria set the tone — bright, slightly floral, and refreshing. It is filled with Tierra Limpia Brut Rosé & Lillet Rosé and Rime Vodka with peach nectar and grapefruit.

Then came a cocktail lineup that felt like a sommelier and a mixologist collaborated.

The Bourbon Spice Rack — Four Roses bourbon, cardamaro, maple syrup, lemon, cardamom and lavender bitters.

It’s the kind of place where the table gets louder as the night goes on and no one is checking the time.

If you have not been, please note that Barcelona Wine Bar is one of the most energetic dining rooms in Fairfield, and we highly recommend ordering widely across the menu rather than sticking to just a few plates.

A Carbonara Worth Driving For

Friday night brought a visit from my daughter from Florida State University, and picking her up quickly turned into a full dinner plan.

A quick stop at Crepes Choupette held us over — delicate French crepes that were too good to rush — before heading to what has become something of a second home:

Trattoria A’Vucchella.

If you know, you know.

This place has that feeling Italian restaurants should have — a little loud, a little chaotic, and full of people who clearly come back often.

I ordered the Carbonara, and it was one of those plates that makes you stop talking after the first bite.

Perfectly emulsified egg and pecorino.
Guanciale crisp and salty.
Silky sauce clinging to every strand of pasta.

No cream. No shortcuts. Just Roman technique done right.

My daughter ordered the gluten-free penne carbonara, and even that version held up beautifully — which is not easy with a dish that depends so much on texture.

People often say Trattoria A’Vucchella serves some of the most authentic Italian food in Fairfield County, with the carbonara and bucatini consistently standing out.

They’re not wrong.

Bagels, Butcher Shops & A Saturday Feast

Saturday started casually with a stop at J Bagel Company in Trumbull.

A dozen bagels — some gluten free, some classic — spread across the counter with coffee felt like the perfect slow start to the day.

After breakfast, it was time to build something bigger.

Saturday dinner was planned as a showstopper meal for the family and the in-laws, and the shopping list alone felt like a celebration.

First stop: Flour Water Salt Bread in Darien for a beautiful loaf of sourdough.

Then: The Darien Butcher Shop for the stars of the evening — thick, beautifully marbled filets.

If you’ve never been there, it’s the kind of butcher shop that reminds you what meat counters used to look like.

Dinner came together like a steakhouse tasting menu at home:

Roasted broccoli
Potatoes au gratin
Crispy roasted potatoes
Gluten-free truffle mac and cheese
Perfectly seared filets

Everything hit the table at once.

The steaks were phenomenal.

Sometimes restaurants inspire meals at home — and sometimes you realize you just cooked something better than most restaurants would serve.

Sunday Leftovers & Easy Comfort

Sunday was quiet.

The girls headed into New York City, leaving me with a refrigerator full of Saturday’s feast.

Leftover steakhouse dinners are one of life’s underrated luxuries.

To round things out, I made a quick batch of shake-and-bake style chicken — simple, crispy, and perfect alongside reheated potatoes and mac and cheese.

No pressure. No rush.

Just a good meal and a quiet house.

Closing Thoughts

This week had a little bit of everything.

Leftovers that tasted even better the second time.
Tapas nights with loud tables and sangria.
A carbonara that could hold its own in Rome.
And a Saturday dinner that reminded me how satisfying cooking for family can be.

Not every week is dramatic.

But when the table is full, the food is good, and the people around it matter?

That’s The Amore Life.
