This week unfolded like a coastal dream—starting with a Labor Day seafood feast by the water, strolling with gelato in hand, misadventures in cooking (thanks, forgotten glasses!), and ending with cast-iron seared steaks and smoked chicken that wrapped summer with flair.
Labor Day in Rowayton – Seafood That Feeds the Soul
We kicked off the week right: dinner in Rowayton at Rowayton Seafood, an award-winning spot celebrated for fresh seafood and stunning water views as stated by Luxury Experience and I agree 100%. We started with roasted oysters with garlic, parmesan, parsley, and butter—just unbelievable. I chose grilled line-caught swordfish with a corn-and-truffle oil medley, artichokes, tomato confit, and cauliflower purée that was out of this world. Others raved about the lobster roll, salmon, NY strip, and linguine with clams. I highly recommend reservations especially in the summer as the restaurant is “Perfect for a summer evening… everything was so great and beautiful!” says Wanderlog.

Tuesday Glow-Up: Gelato & Burgers Before the Game
After errands and a before the field hockey game, we stopped at Little Pub in Fairfield—its hallmark hearty burgers and grilled chicken salad still go down easy. Coming back, a spontaneous right turn took us to Oggi Gelato for nighttime scoops. The Chocolate Hazelnut and Strawberry Cheesecake flavors never disappoint.
Cooking Quirks & Happy Accidents
Wednesday’s dinner pivot was forced by missing glasses: instead of breast, I grabbed chicken thighs. Turned out to be a blessing—Pellet-smoked paprika-and-honey thighs with garlic chips, green beans, and roasted sweet potatoes. Absolutely drool-worthy. (Recipe on its way)
Thursday lunchtime brought nostalgia with a lunch stop at Super Duper Weenie, a hot-dog institution known for craft franks with house made relishes and bakery-fresh buns. Dinner at home featured cast-iron filet mignon seared in garlic-rosemary butter—Ruth’s Chris, take note.

Friday Morning Comfort
We started Friday at Trumbull Café & Grill—a breakfast & lunch spot beloved for its flavorful bowls and homey comfort food. But Friday wasn’t about a quick breakfast after all—it turned into a family gathering at Basso Wine Bar in Westport. Known for its vibrant atmosphere, craft cocktails, and shareable plates, Basso is equal parts wine bar and Italian-inspired kitchen. We met up with the kids, enjoyed some drinks, and shared a spread of small bites that captured the lively energy the place is known for. Reviewers often highlight the “fun vibe” and “innovative cocktails,” and it certainly lived up to the reputation.
Basso Wine Bar in Westport ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- Giving it a 4. I would give it a 4.5. I understand it is a Tapas and drinks location but if you have the Pollo Scarpariello on the menu, it should be good, not so much. It was “ok”.
Studio Café in Westport & the Forgotten Passport Saga
Saturday morning brought us to Studio Café in Westport, one of CT’s most beautiful breakfast spots operated inside a design boutique. I ordered the Lyrebird—eggs, bacon, sourdough toast—and a Nutella waffle that had “drool” written all over it. Styling, service, and flavor all lined up.

In a moment of travel drama, I realized en route to JFK that I forgot my passport—flight missed, but it gave me an extra meal that evening at Sally’s Apizza in Fairfield. Pizza was nearly as good as the New Haven original, but with room for friendlier, faster service.

Sunday Send-Off: Breakfast Before Amsterdam
Sunday morning, before heading to Amsterdam, we stopped at The Granola Bar in Fairfield for a proper send-off. Their menu is packed with modern, health-conscious comfort food, and locals love it for breakfast and brunch. I went with a hearty morning plate before heading to the airport—a simple but satisfying way to start a long day of travel. No cooking this time, just good food and the excitement of the trip ahead.
