What I Ate This Week: Fairfield Gelato, Beer Gardens, and Pasta alla Gricia (Aug 25-31)

This week was all about celebrating family, savoring Fairfield favorites, and leaning into Italian comfort food. From sweet evening strolls with gelato to lively outdoor beers midweek, finishing strong with a classic Roman pasta at home, each bite carried a little piece of la dolce vita.

Starting the Week with a Gelato Stroll in Fairfield

The week started with leftovers at home, but the real treat came later: an evening stroll downtown for Oggi Gelato. I paired Chocolate Hazelnut with Strawberry Cheesecake, a combination as indulgent as it sounds. If you have not gone, make it a point. Reviewers praise Oggi for “authentic Italian flavors” and creamy perfection—an ideal way to sweeten the night.

News12 just produced a Made in Connecticut Feature on them. Take a look.

Midweek: Italian Combo + Chicken Vesuvio

Running errands led me to Sorrento Importing for a classic Italian Combo sandwich—cured meats, cheese, and bread in perfect harmony. Reviews highlight it as a “beloved local staple for authentic deli classics.” I agree. A lot of sauces and Italian desserts to choose from. Definitely in my rotation now that I am local.

That evening, dinner went home-style with Chicken Vesuvio served alongside garlic-butter pasta and grilled chicken. Easy, flavorful, and satisfying.

We headed over to 314 Beer Garden in Norwalk. With a sprawling outdoor setup, lively energy, and plenty of covered seating, it’s a go-to for groups. I went with a Maine Lunch IPA and a crisp Margherita pizza, which hit the spot from their coal-fired oven. Around the table, burgers, sliders, and a turkey-brie panini kept everyone happy. Reviewers often highlight its “fun vibe” and “strong beer list,” and I’d agree—it’s a great hangout spot.

The next morning back at Roost Kitchen + Coffee, I indulged in Nutella-stuffed French toast with roasted bananas—decadent perfection. Earlier I’d had their pancakes; this week’s single bite might just top them.

Friday: Pasta alla Gricia at Home

Friday night was reserved for home cooking. On the menu? Pasta alla Gricia, one of Rome’s four iconic pasta dishes. Guanciale, Pecorino Romano, black pepper, and al dente pasta—it’s minimalist perfection. Making it at home reminded me why this dish has stood the test of time: rich, salty, comforting, and timelessly Italian.

Saturday Football, Saturday Night Indulgence

Football Saturday kicked off at Elicit Brewing with chicken tacos—good beer, okay food, but fun energy with the games on. Dinner that night was much more memorable at Luna Azzurra in Fairfield. My Chicken Piccata was bright and delicious, while my wife’s beet salad with chicken was equally impressive. The evening ended with a homemade ricotta cheesecake, the kind of dessert that lingers in memory long after the last bite.
