Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger
  • Citrus juicer

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Blanco tequila
  • 1 oz Lime juice Freshly squeezed
  • 3/4 oz Cointreau Grand Marnier or triple sec also works
  • 1/2 oz Agave syrup
  • 2-3 slices Fresh jalapeño
  • 1 tbsp Tajin seasoning For rim
  • 1 wedge Lime Garnish, rim
  • Ice

Instructions

  • Prepare the glass. Run a lime wedge around the rim of a rocks glass. Dip the rim into a shallow plate of Tajín seasoning, coating evenly. Fill the glass with fresh ice and set aside.
For a milder rim, mix equal parts Tajín and kosher salt.
  • Muddle the jalapeño. Add 2–3 thin jalapeño slices to a cocktail shaker along with the agave syrup. Gently muddle to release the pepper's natural oils and heat.
Avoid crushing the seeds aggressively, as this can make the drink overly spicy.
  • Add the spirits and citrus. Pour in the blanco tequila, fresh lime juice, and Cointreau. Fill the shaker with ice.
  • Shake vigorously. Shake for approximately 12–15 seconds until the shaker is cold and the ingredients are thoroughly combined.
  • Strain and serve. Double-strain the margarita into the prepared rocks glass over fresh ice to remove jalapeño pieces and seeds.
  • Garnish and enjoy. Add a fresh lime wheel or jalapeño slice. Serve immediately while ice-cold.

Notes

  • Control the heat: Start with two jalapeño slices for moderate heat. For a spicier cocktail, use four or five slices, or allow the muddled jalapeño to sit in the tequila for a few minutes before shaking.
  • Choose the right tequila: A good blanco tequila offers clean, bright agave flavors that complement the citrus and jalapeño. Reposado tequila also works beautifully if you prefer a slightly richer, smoother finish.
  • Fresh lime makes the difference: Bottled lime juice tends to lack the vibrant acidity needed to balance the sweetness and heat.
  • Make it less sweet: Reduce the agave syrup to ¼ ounce for a more tart, tequila-forward margarita.
  • Make a pitcher: For eight cocktails, combine 16 ounces tequila, 8 ounces lime juice, 6 ounces Cointreau, and 4 ounces agave syrup. Add sliced jalapeños and refrigerate for 15–20 minutes, tasting periodically for heat. Strain out the peppers and serve over ice.
Gluten-free: This cocktail can be naturally gluten-free when made with gluten-free ingredients. Check individual liqueur and seasoning labels if needed.
